Is it Better to Paint and/or Stain Before You Cut or Engrave?

In the projects that we have developed so far, yes! We test all of our designs to make sure that they produce high-quality results for you.

Do you paint/stain the wood before engraving? Painting has the potential to bring out a lot of rich, beautiful detail.

You should definitely stain before you cut when there are intricate cuts. If you can, it’s typically better to paint or stain BEFORE you engrave or cut.

We have gotten excellent results when we:

  • Lightly sand the blank wood
  • Tack off or wipe with lint-free cloth
  • Add a thin coat of paint
  • Lightly sand the blank wood
  • Tack off or wipe with lint-free cloth
  • Add a second thin coat of paint
  • Lightly sand the blank wood
  • Tack off or wipe with lint-free cloth

You can speed up this process by drying each paint coat with a hair dryer. In most cases, this entire process can be completed quite quickly. We have used craft paint and a latex satin paint. Both provide great results.

The bunnies that you see pictured here were created using this process. We love the finished look!
