A Halloween Project That’s Big on Charm and Easy to Make
Not every DIY project has to be complicated to make a big impression.
Our new Ghost Rag Flag is exactly that kind of project. It’s easy to put together and doesn’t require a long list of supplies or complicated techniques. In just a short time, you’ll have a Halloween decoration that’s ready to hang and sure to bring a smile each time you see it.
Whether you’re cutting the SVG on your laser or painting one of our wood blanks (coming soon), I think you’ll enjoy just how quickly this little ghost comes to life.
What Makes a Rag Flag?
If you’ve never made a rag flag before, you’re in for a treat.
Instead of using fabric as a background, strips of fabric or ribbon become part of the design itself. Once they’re threaded through the slot at the bottom of the ghost, they create movement, texture, and plenty of personality.
The best part? There isn’t a right or wrong way to do it.
Mix fabrics, ribbons, lace, muslin, or even torn quilting cotton. Vary the lengths, combine patterns, or keep everything neutral. Every finished Ghost Rag Flag ends up with its own unique look.
Two Ways to Create It
We wanted everyone to be able to enjoy this project, so it’s available in two versions.
SVG Digital Download
If you have a laser cutter, the SVG version lets you cut the project yourself and resize it to fit your needs. The download includes SVG, DXF, and EPS formats for compatibility with laser software.
Physical Wood Blanks (coming soon)
If you’d rather skip the cutting and get right to the fun part, our precision-cut wood blank is ready for paint and assembly. It’s a great option if you love crafting but don’t own a laser.
Whichever version you choose, the finished project is the same.
Supplies You’ll Need
The beauty of this project is that you probably already have most of what you need. We will link the supplies we used throughout the post to make them easy to find. - Acrylic and/or chalk paint (black, white, and gray)
- Clear wood glue
- Fine-grit sandpaper
- Fabric or ribbon
- Optional…very helpful - Spring Clamps while the glue dries. You can also get these at your local Dollar Tree.
If you’re cutting your own, you’ll also need your favorite laser cutter and wood or hardboard. Our sample was made from layered 3mm tempered hardboard.
Make It Your Own
Some makers keep everything black and white for a classic farmhouse style.
Others add buffalo plaid ribbons, cheesecloth, lace, or vintage fabrics.
I’ve even seen projects where a single accent color completely changes the personality of the finished piece.
Don’t be afraid to experiment. Those little choices are what make handmade designs feel personal.
Where to Display It
The Ghost Rag Flag is the perfect size for adding a little Halloween charm almost anywhere.
Try displaying it:
- On an entry table
- On a shelf or riser
- In a wreath
- On a mantel
- As part of a larger Halloween vignette
- On a covered front porch
It also pairs beautifully with pumpkins, lanterns, old books, and other rustic Halloween decorations.
